Is this stone suitable for exterior use in extreme climates?

Yes.  Both of our manufacturers have proven themselves for many years in extreme climates and their warranties reflect this.

What type of moisture barrier is recommended?

We recommend Double D paper for all exterior applications.

If I use a cement board sheathing, do I have to use a metal lath as well?

Corners should be wrapped with metal lath if there is a chance for expansion or contraction.

Can I use an acidic cleaner to remove excess mortar from the stone surface.

No.  Take extra care to keep the stones clean when laying them.  A mild dishwashing detergent is an acceptable cleaner that won't discolor the stone.

What type of sealer is recommended for the stone?

Most exterior applications are not sealed.  If you absolutely want to seal exterior stone, a breathable sealer (without solids) is used.  A sealer with solids is acceptable for interior applications.  We stock both types here at Northland Brick.

Is it a good idea to use a tight stacked stone on the exterior of my home?

A grout joint provides protection from water.  Without a grouted joint it is possible for water to seep behind the stone and cause problems.

What do I use to grout the stones?

Use the same mortar that you used to lay the stones.
